- True Story -
As we approach the Winter Solstice on Dec 21st and our days get darker and darker, I feel the natural impulse to want to cozy up, turn inward and reflect on the past year, it's been a wild one and there's a lot to integrate. It is a natural and important part of our seasonal cycle and our cyclical nature as humans to honour this time of year and it's natural wisdom of slowing down.
Let me ask you something.... Do you also find it fascinating that our culture has turned this natural time of sacred darkness and introspection into a whirlwind of festivities, planning, preparations, consumerism and busyness?!
Each year, so many of you reach out to me to confess how overwhelmed, stressed out & spread thin you feel during this time of year and ask me for resources and ways to stay grounded and sane through the countless festivities and long to-do lists. After the rollercoaster ride that has been 2020, this is the exact opposite of what is needed to soothe our poor, frazzled nerves.
The message is loud and clear: you’re tired of feeling the pressure of society that often tells you that you need to be constantly running, going, pushing and doing more. You’re craving a more sustainable and natural way of moving through the holidays. Over the years, you guys have asked me for resources to get through any struggles with "too much" that you may be experiencing at this time of year and I'm delivering my collection of all time faves right to the comfort of your own home :)
A growing library of 15+ practices, plus supportive resources from Ally
MOVEMENT
These yoga practices will integrate breath and encourage "meditation in motion" that will nourish mind, body & soul. Slow and gentle and restorative in nature. These practices are meant to really ground you and connect you to that calming energy of the earth, leaving you feeling peaceful and calm.
"The body benifets from movement"
STILLNESS
Restorative yoga is slow and meditative, using the support of props we exert as little effort as possible and move into a place of deep rest and cellular regeneration. Yoga Nidra & Meditation act like a much needed antidote to overstimulation. These practices you will want to come back to again and again as a form of "hygiene" for calming your whole nervous system.
"The mind benefits from stillness"
NOURISHMENT
The most supportive, healing foods I've found to help my body cope with the "over-indulgence" that can happen at this time of year. Gentle and detoxifying herbs & whole foods. Smoothies, tea mixtures & other recipes to support the whole system. Warm stews and drinks to support "svastha" (health) in your body this winter and build immunity against disease.
"Eating well is a form of self respect"
Over time I have learned that if I don't honour my body's natural need for quiet reflection (to at least some degree) then by month's end my body shuts down with stress, fatigue and illness. What I have also noticed is that every year it is a challenge to carve out time for personal reflection, true nourishment and restoration in the midst of all the outward chaos. I am slowly learning to set firm boundaries on my time and energy and not just do what this 'Holiday Season' expects of me - which seems to be "ALL THE THINGS!"
I want you to know you’re not alone. We live in a culture that turns us away from our bodies and away from actively listening to our intuition and understanding our needs. Then we end up ignoring those needs at the expense of our own well-being.
In this mini online session from Winter Solstice until the New Year, the last thing I will suggesting is to add MORE to your December to~dos. I will simply be providing resources that you can explore and integrate into your days over the winter: movement practices, guidance to rest and stillness, and some of my favourite nourishing and detoxifying recipes & herbal teas of all time. I will suggest that you tune in and listen to the needs of your body and mind above all the noise of the outside world. Know that this is not "another thing" to feel the pressure to complete, it will be here to support you when you need it. To come back to whenever your needing some healing "down time" . I will also be there reminding you that you can give yourself the permission to say NO to things that are energy draining, and say YES to quiet time, reflection and self~care with guided practices to support just that.
Also, there will be opportunities to consider what you would like to let go of from the past year/decade, and what you would like to invite in as the days begin to brighten again after the Winter Solstice (the birth of the SUN)
My wish is that this experience leaves you feeling re~engaged with that which you cherish most as we move towards the return of the light for another trip around the sun! I hope you can join me.
